How to increase the resolution of DLP projectors #3DThursday #3DPrinting

Autodesk Ember 3D Printer shares:

By default, the Ember 3D printer uses its projector in “video mode”, in which the projector low-pass filters your slice images and resamples them to accommodate the 45° orientation of the mirrors in its DMD (Digital Micromirror Device). This results in some loss of detail and aliasing artifacts, as explained in this article by Karl Guttag. A single white pixel in a slice image gets transformed into a small group of gray pixels with a bright one near its center, and their exact arrangement and intensities will depend on the particular location of the source pixel in the original image.

It’s not every day you meet a sister who not only builds robots, is an expert in Artificial Intelligence, and worked for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, but is also a down-to-earth, humorous, old-school Blerd (Black nerd) who was inspired by The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, and all things Sci-Fi as a little girl.

From the interview:

I started working at JPL (NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab) after my freshman year in college. That’s when I became involved in programming. I was never classically trained as a computer scientist. I had to learn db4 and Pascal. JPL — they do robotics. So, I paired up with a group focused on AI. When I started grad school I had to figure out if I could use what I was doing at JPL with what I was doing at grad school.

Upon graduating from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1970, she was employed by RCA located in Moorestown, New Jersey; and in 1971, she transferred to RCA in Springfield, Virginia. Her projects while with RCA as a design engineer included circuit design and development of custom integrated circuitry for phased-array radar control systems; specification, project management, and performance evaluation of control system equipment; and engineering support for NASA sounding rocket and telemetry systems programs. She authored a paper concerning design procedures for special-purpose integrated circuitry.

Dr. Resnik was a biomedical engineer and staff fellow in the Laboratory of Neurophysiology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, from 1974 to 1977, where she performed biological research experiments concerning the physiology of visual systems. Immediately preceding her selection by NASA in 1978, she was a senior systems engineer in product development with Xerox Corporation at El Segundo, California.

NASA EXPERIENCE: Selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978, she completed a 1-year training and evaluation period in August 1979. Dr. Resnik worked on a number of projects in support of Orbiter development, including experiment software, the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), and training techniques.

Dr. Resnik first flew as a mission specialist on STS 41-D which launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on August 30, 1984. She was accompanied by spacecraft commander Hank Hartsfield, pilot Mike Coats, fellow mission specialists, Steve Hawley and Mike Mullane, and payload specialist Charlie Walker. This was the maiden flight of the orbiter Discovery. During this 7-day mission the crew successfully activated the OAST-1 solar cell wing experiment, deployed three satellites, SBS-D, SYNCOM IV-2, and TELSTAR 3-C, operated the CFES-III experiment, the student crystal growth experiment, and photography experiments using the IMAX motion picture camera. The crew earned the name “Icebusters” in successfully removing hazardous ice particles from the orbiter using the Remote Manipulator System. STS 41-D completed 96 orbits of the earth before landing at Edwards Air Force Base, California, on September 5, 1984. With the completion of this flight she logged 144 hours and 57 minutes in space.

Dr. Resnik was a mission specialist on STS 51-L which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 11:38:00 EST on January 28, 1986. The crew on board the Orbiter Challenger included the spacecraft commander, Mr. F.R. Scobee, the pilot, Commander M.J. Smith (USN), fellow mission specialists, Dr. R.E. McNair, and Lieutenant Colonel E.S. Onizuka (USAF), as well as two civilian payload specialists, Mr. G.B. Jarvis and Mrs. S. C. McAuliffe. The STS 51-L crew died on January 28, 1986 when Challenger exploded after launch.

Rebecca Junell: NASA Engineer #nwed2016 @nwed1919 #RaisingProfiles

In honor of National Women in Engineering day, today we celebrate NASA engineer Rebecca Junell!

Here’s a bit about Rebecca from EngineerGirl:

“I like being able to visualize how things work, being able to get that picture in your head of how you can manipulate ideas and put them together,” she said. “It’s nice to know that something works, but it’s even more important to understand the basic ideas of how the problem behaves. It’s kind of like the satisfaction of assembling puzzle pieces.”

At NASA, Junell has had the opportunity to help test rocket engines before they launch. The team she works with makes sure the test stand and its parts can withstand the extreme heat and extreme cold of a rocket engine test. She analyzes and reviews data as the pipes, instrumentation, and structures are exposed to different environments. Junell has been working with and testing the RS-25, also known as the Space Shuttle Main Engine, to get it ready to be reused for NASA’s next vehicle.

Future parts might include a fume hood with helping hands, a cyclone for the hose so small pieces of plastic can suck up stuff with out hurling it at the fan blades, and a side body that can hold solder.

Yoky Matsuoka is the former Vice President of Technology at Nest, where she was in charge of UX and the learning aspects of Nest’s thermostat. She is now working in Apple on undisclosed aspects of their health business.

Previously, she was an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University and an associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, director of that university’s Neurobotics Laboratory, director of the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering. She is a 2007 MacArthur Fellow, commonly referred to as Genius Award. At UW, her research combined neuroscience and robotics—sometimes referred to by Matsuoka by the portmanteau neurobotics—to create more realistic prosthetics…

…An example of her work is a lifelike robotic hand, modeled bone-by-bone from a human hand, with multiple motors each corresponding to muscles and with strings playing the role of tendons along each digit. Her intent is that nervous system signals would ultimately be able to control the electronic replica in the same manner as a natural appendage. To this end, her work uses such means as measuring the electric current along each muscle in the hand as a person reaches for and grasps an object and having patients do virtual reality exercises with an oversized arm so that errors are more apparent. Matthew O’Donnell, dean of the U.W. College of Engineering characterizes her as “a mechanical engineer, neuroscientist, bioengineer, robotics expert and computer scientist, all in one… [with] …the ability to see what is possible by combining all these disciplines.” The MacArthur Foundation characterizes her work as “transforming our understanding of how the central nervous system coordinates musculoskeletal action and of how robotic technology can enhance the mobility of people with manipulation disabilities.

Elegant Rococo Belle Costume

Belle’s yellow ball gown is about as beautiful as it gets in the world of Disney princess attire, but cosplayer Casey Renee figured out how to make the dress even more elaborate. She went rococo with it and designed and crafted the gown and wig from the ground up. It involved sewing, applying beads by hand, making a corset, and even crafting figures of Lumiere and Cogsworth (the latter went in the hair). She told Fashionably Geek:

It took over 300 hours to make the 9 garments (including socks and shoes) complete with over 2000 beads and pearls. The entire garment weighs 22 pounds with 30 yards of fabric and a wig that Cogsworth (which I also constructed) sits upon.

How to register your drone

This guide covers the basics of registering your drone for hobby purposes. The FAA will finalize a new regulatory frame for small unmanned aeral systems in late August 2016 for commerical work.

If your quadcopter weighs more then 250 grams you will need to register. The fee is only 5 dollars per person, so you can fly an unlimited amount of quadcopters once registered.

this is a slightly modified remix of the mini camera mount from “arovillard”.
i only made the cam opening a little bit longer and removed a little bit of the
border at the bottom side (where the microphone is).
now its a little bit easier to put the cam in.

Margaret Hamilton was MIT’s Director of the Software Engineering Division at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory and is credited with popularizing the term Software Engineer! Via Real women of STEM

Margaret H. Hamilton is the founder and CEO of Hamilton Technologies, Inc. (HTI). She created the Universal Systems Language (USL) and its automation, the 001 Tool Suite; the mathematical theory upon which it is based, Development Before the Fact (DBTF); and has been responsible for many applications designed and developed with USL-001.
As Director of the Software Engineering Division at MIT’s Charles Stark Draper Laboratory, Hamilton led the team that created the onboard flight software for NASA’s Apollo command modules and lunar landing vehicles.

—Notice: I’ve identified a minor issue with the design. Please don’t print this yet. Depending on the manufacturer of the 4021 DIP, it may interfere with the micro SD slot on the Pi, causing the case to not close fully. I’ll make the back a little deeper to fix it.—

This is my design of a replacement back for a Nintendo NES-004 Controller, for use with a Raspberry Pi Zero V1.2 or V1.3 running RetroPie. The Pi is held securely in place with four M2.5 x 5 mm plastic screws (McMaster-Carr 96817A890 or similar), and the case is held together the original screws (or, if you lose them, McMaster-Carr 96817A846). Print with support inside the recesses for the case screws. Screw holes in the printed part are dimensioned and spaced correctly, but should be reamed clean with a #45 drill for a precise fit.

I have just completed my PIGRRL 2 with alarger LCD, 3.5 inches from “Tontec” and larger battery set 3200mh. Thanks to Adafruit and great documentation, along with some great web sites with some key tweaks, I was able to make it work.
